9/11 Patriot’s Day

9/11 Patriot’s Day

The horror of 9/11 is imprinted on my mind and soul. It was the “Pearl Harbor” of my generation. I'm sorry that younger generations will not realize the impact in the same way that older generations do. It seems to me that all future generations should understand what it means to have war devastate our own turf and our own people, but we can't pass along the depth of our experience; only our words and images.

This is exactly how it is when we share Jesus with others. My experience with Christ is deeply imprinted in my soul and spirit. Jesus has walked with me all my life, even before I knew Him as my Savior.

But we can't pass along the depth of our experience; only our words. To HEAR about something is never the same as experiencing it. Many people hear about Jesus but until they have that personal encounter with Him they'll really never understand what a profound, life-changing and transformative experience it is when we are truly "born again."

Oh taste and see for yourselves that the LORD is good! How blessed are those who trust in Him." Psalm 34:8

Genelle Guzman-McMillan was buried in the rubble of the World Trade Center on 9/11. She couldn't move, her legs were pinned by a beam, she was alone, and in absolute darkness.

And she knew that she was at the very gate of hell, because she had been raised by a Christian mother but had lived a very secular life. She knew if she died, that awful door to hell would open for her. As Genelle lay in the dark, she regretted all the wasted time, and she tried to learn how to pray.

At the moment when she felt like giving up, someone held her hand and told her help was coming. After 27 hours in the rubble, Genelle was rescued.

Genelle’s book is on Amazon. This Guideposts article gives a condensed version of Genelle's amazing story. Click the Link:

Small Miracles

  • The head of a company survived 9/11 because his son started kindergarten.
  • Another man was alive because it was his turn to bring donuts.
  • One woman was late because her alarm clock didn't go off on time.
  • Another was late because he was stuck on the NJ Turnpike due to an auto accident.
  • One missed his bus.
  • One spilled food on her clothes and had to take time to change.
  • One man's car wouldn't start.
  • One person went back to answer the telephone.
  • One had a child that dawdled and didn't get ready as soon as he should have.
  • One person couldn't get a taxi.
  • One that really struck me was the man who put on a new pair of shoes that morning. Before he got to the Towers he developed a blister on his foot, so he stopped at a drugstore to buy a Band-Aid. That's why he is alive today.

These reasons, and more, are why some people didn't die on 9/11/2001. Of course, we know that thousands of people did not survive the attacks: but authorities were expecting the death count to be much higher than it actually was. Hundreds of small "coincidences" may be the reasons why people were not in the Towers that morning.

Now when I am stuck in traffic, miss an elevator, turn back to answer a ringing telephone --all the little things that annoy me-- I think to myself, this is exactly where I'm meant to be at this very moment.

So next time your morning doesn’t go as planned; don’t get angry. Don’t panic. God might be at work. Maybe this delay is protection I’ll never understand.
