THE CHURCH AT SARDIS Study of Revelation continued REVELATION 3 3.1 “And to the angel of the assembly in Sardis write: “He who has the seven Spirits of God, and the seven stars says these things: “I know your works, that you have a reputation of being alive, but you are dead. 3.2 Wake up, and keep the things that remain, which you were about to throw away, for I have found no works of yours perfected before my God. 3.3 Remember therefore how you have received and heard. Keep it, and repent. If therefore you won’t watch, I will come as a thief, and you won’t know what hour I will come upon you. -WEB Bible
The people in the Sardis church were like the Pharisees, who made a great show of being religious but they were dead spiritually. Sardis has a good reputation as a Church, but Jesus says they’re faking it. They’re not taking their Christian life seriously.
Some people think they can fool everybody into believing they’re good Christians. It’s even possible to fool ourselves, but it’s not possible to fool God. I hope the church in Sardis did some serious soul searching when they got this letter. THE REWARDS FOR SARDIS
REVELATION 3.4 Nevertheless you have a few names in Sardis that did not defile their garments. They will walk with me in white, for they are worthy. 3.5 He who overcomes will be arrayed in white garments, and I will in no way blot his name out of the book of life, and I will confess his name before my Father, and before his angels. 3.6 He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the assemblies. -WEB Bible
What greater reward is there, than to walk with Jesus in His Kingdom? Those who endure are also promised eternal life.
We have very little idea what “eternal life” actually means, but woven throughout the book of Revelation are glimpses of heaven, the glory of God, the coming Kingdom and even our return to Eden. We have glorious things to look forward to!
