CHRISTMAS STORY: The WORD of GOD The Virgin Mary is often depicted holding a book, which is odd since books as we know them were not invented until the mid-1600's. There is a purpose for this visual, however: Mary is the mother of "The Word" of God.
This title of "The Word" directs us back to the time of Creation, when God spoke the earth into existence. The Apostle John explains the incredible meaning of this title for Jesus Christ:
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things were made through Him, and without Him nothing was made that was made. In Him was life, and the life was the light of men. John 1:1-4
The Psalmist David also describes how God spoke the earth into being:
The LORD merely spoke, and the heavens were created. He breathed the word, and all the stars were born. He assigned the sea its boundaries and locked the oceans in vast reservoirs. Let the whole world fear the LORD, and let everyone stand in awe of him. For when he spoke, the world began! It appeared at his command. Psalm 33:6-9 NLT
And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth. John 1:14
When John says that he saw the glory of Christ Jesus, he is referring to the Transfiguration; when Jesus met with Moses and Elijah on the mountain. That experience had a profound impact on the three disciples who witnessed it. John had no doubt whatsoever that Jesus was God's Son, and he gives testimony of his experience: we beheld His glory.
So, when we say that Jesus is "The Word", we're referring to the Creator Himself, with all the mind-blowing power and glory that are implied. John wants us to know Jesus the glorified Word of God.
