OF ORDINARY PEOPLE

OF ORDINARY PEOPLE

So Peter got up and went with them. On his arrival, they took him to the upper room. All the widows stood around him, weeping and showing him the tunics and other clothing that Dorcas had made while she was still with them. Acts 9:39

Many people go unappreciated while they’re alive. They live quietly, serving and loving those around them, without seeking recognition or praise. They’re ordinary people, often overlooked as they go about their daily lives.

But one day, they’re no longer there. Their work is finished, and they are gone. It’s only then, in their absence, that people begin to realize how much they were loved, and how deeply their contributions mattered. In the silence left behind, their true worth is finally understood.

We lived at a retreat camp for a few summers. An older gentleman by the name of Harold was in charge of picking up all the garbage from trashcans in the kitchen and other buildings. Nobody noticed him much: a quiet simple man doing his job.

Then Harold went away for two weeks and the teenage boys were in charge of picking up all the trash instead. Chaos ensued! Garbage cans overflowed and everywhere in the camp there was stress due to the trash situation.

No one realized what an amazing job Harold was doing, until he was gone. Everyone was so glad to welcome him back!
