AGAIN AND AGAIN Perhaps the LORD will work for us, for the LORD is not restrained
to save by many or by few. 1 Samuel 14:6
British
forces under General Edmund Allenby replicated Jonathan's Biblical climb up
the rocky cliffs of Michmash during World War I on February 18, 1918.
The
Bible Story:
- In 1 Samuel 14,
Prince Jonathan and his armor-bearer scaled the steep, rocky crags of Bozez
and Seneh at Michmash on their hands and feet to launch a surprise
attack against a Philistine garrison.
- The Panic: Their sudden appearance
caused the sleeping camp to panic, leading to a massive Israelite
victory under King Saul.

The
World War I Event:
- The Discovery: During the Sinai and
Palestine Campaign, a British brigade major recognized the geography of
the pass at Michmash from the Biblical text.
- The Tactic: On February 18, 1918,
British troops used the exact same secret mountain path by night to
scale the cliffs and bypass strong Ottoman/Turkish defenses.
- The Outcome: The sleeping Turkish
garrison was caught completely off guard, panicked, and fled. This
tactical success helped clear the way for the Allied capture of Jericho
a few days later.
