IN STEP WITH THE SPIRIT God is spirit, and those who worship him must worship in spirit and truth. John 4:24
This is a precious verse for those who know what it means to sense the Holy Spirit in our lives. Paul thinks that living with the presence of the Holy Spirit is a very natural part of being a Christian:
Since we live by the Spirit, let us walk in step with the Spirit. Galatians 5:25
However, there are those who claim to be Christians but they’re making no effort to submit to the Holy Spirit's powerful work within us. Paul warns us against fake religion:
Having the appearance of godliness, but denying its power. Avoid such people. 2 Timothy 3:5
How then, do we have more of the Holy Spirit in our lives? This next verse is key for learning how to worship God in spirit and in truth:
And you shall love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength. Deuteronomy 6:5
That verse was quoted and emphasized by Jesus himself, and it is mentioned repeatedly in the New Testament: in Luke 10:27, Mark 12:30 and in Matthew 22:37.
Furthermore, Deuteronomy 6 goes on to tell us that we must love God's Word as much as we love God: we must read it, study it, talk about it, share it, teach it to our children!
In yielding to God in all these ways of faith, trust and love, we will naturally grow spiritually and learn what it means to "walk in step with the Spirit." God is spirit, and those who worship him must worship in spirit and truth. John 4:24
Notice also, that believers who worship God in spirit are also more likely to know what real truth is.
