WORD TODAY: It's That Simple!

It’s That Simple
By Joni Eareckson Tada

Godliness with contentment is great gain.
1 Timothy 6:6

The pastor invited little Jani to the front of the auditorium. “I want to ask you some questions,” he said, holding her in his arms. “Do you love your mom and dad and do they love you?”

“Uh-huh,”
Jani said with a nod, smiling shyly.

“How about school? Do you like your teacher?”

“Uh-huh.”

“And do you love Jesus and does he love you?”

“Uh-huh.”

The pastor turned to the congregation. “A little jealous, aren’t you?” Jani climbed down and ran back to her dad’s lap, giggling.

Jealous of what, I wonder. Jealous that Jani is a child with an intellectual disability? Jealous of all the teasing Jani might receive as she grows up? Jealous of the opportunities she will miss?

No. We’re jealous of Jani’s contentment. Her “uh-huh” speaks volumes. The complexities of life have vanished, and she lives a life of simple joy and contentment.

“But Jani’s just a child,” you say. “My life isn’t—and can’t be—that simple.”

Don’t believe it. Your heavenly Father—infinitely more capable than Jani’s parents—considers her childlike contentment to be of infinite value. You will have gained infinite joy when you live a godly life and answer the world’s fundamental question, Are you happy? with a direct smile and affirmation like Jani’s. Try saying it… “Uh-huh.”

Lord, I struggle with really believing it’s as simple as Jani makes it sound. But I’ll take that step toward contentment today, seeking the simple joy you’ve promised.

WORD TODAY: Earth's Final Hour

Earth's Final Hour

Continuing the study of
Revelation on Thursdays

Here is a summary of the ground we've covered so far in Revelation:

  • Instructions for 7 Churches, from Jesus Christ himself.
  • Christ will open the 7 Seals on the Scroll, with their corresponding disasters.
  • With the 7th Seal, six Archangels will sound their Trumpets for six more disasters.

Only the 7th Trumpet remains: which means that the return of Jesus Christ will happen when this last and final trumpet is sounded.

Earth's final hour will indeed be a "grand finale" but not in any way that suggests a joyous event. The 7th Trumpet includes vengeance against fallen angels as well as for mankind who continue to resist God.

Even in this dire hour, as God will pour out the full measure of his wrath upon the earth, God will send two powerful Witnesses to give their testimony. God continues to offer mercy for those who will repent, even while the earth shakes and trembles under the wrath of God.

There are many reasons for the dramatic events of the end times, but first and foremost is God’s desire to push people to repentance and faith, if at all possible.

will continue next Thursday:
