The Christmas Story: The Virgin Mary

Christmas Story
The Virgin Mary

Mary said, “Behold, I am the servant of the Lord; let it be to me according to your word.” Luke 1:38

Modesty, piety and purity. These are three words which have mostly disappeared from modern English because they’re not part of our culture. In fact, they are aggressively scorned by many in our society.

Yet, those three words describe the character of the Virgin Mary; a young girl who found favor with God. She had a modest, quiet, humble demeanor. Mary must have been spiritually devout, because Gabriel's message didn't seem to rattle her very much. And she was a young woman who lived a pure life, or else God wouldn't have chosen her.

Was Mary a super-human person who was much more spiritual than any of the rest of us? No, she was just a regular person who was chosen for an extraordinary role in God’s plan.

Mary was a good person whose heart honored God above all else. This is evident by her quiet acceptance of what Gabriel told her. Mary did have a choice, and she told the angel Gabriel that she was willing to be God’s servant.

Throughout history there are heroes of faith who became heroes simply because they said, “Yes, I’ll do what you ask of me, Lord.” Mary’s husband Joseph is another hero of faith, and Hebrews chapter 11 lists many more who believed God and obeyed Him.
